Structural verification of a smoke tube boiler.

The design of a smoke tube boiler imposes that the stress levels induced by its own weight and the thermal expansion are ascertained in all operating conditions. ASTARTE created a finite element model (FEM) including the plating, the perforated plates, the firebox, the tube bundle, the supports/ sells, the shelves / gusset. Simulations included two different operating conditions, each characterized by different temperature distributions.
The FEA verification allowed to define the distributions of stress and deformation in all the components of the boiler. Most critical regions for the structural strength of the plant were also identified.
